This year, Decatur’s 4th and 5th graders have the option to participate in the Global Reading Challenge sponsored by Seattle Public Library! 4th and 5th grade students have already been introduced to the GRC when their class came to the library.

In order to participate, students must return a permission form to the Decatur library by Tues., November 13th

Following are Global Reading Challenge objectives:
* Promote a love of reading
* Introduce children to a wide variety of literature and multicultural reading materials
* Encourage reading for retention
* Encourage group activities and team work while having fun!
* Provide a positive experience between children, librarians, teachers, parents and books

The program is similar to “Battle of the Books”: teams of seven students read 10 books representing a wide variety of reading levels. The program encourages children to have fun and enjoy reading. After reading the books, students take part in a “Quiz Bowl” game to determine the winner for the city of Seattle. Working with their team, students answer specific, fact- and content-based questions about the books.

On February 8th, a Seattle Public Librarian will moderate Decatur’s in-school challenge. One Decatur team will advance to one of the semi-finals challenges on date TBD at SPL’s downtown library. From there, the winner of our semi-final will compete in the City Finals at SPL’s downtown library on March 19th
